SAFE AND FUN
IN THE WATER
The Wabash County YMCA is implementing new guidelines to keep every swimmer safe. These guidelines are required by insurance and have been proven important and effective across the country.
WHO NEEDS TO TEST?
Every swimmer under 16 will be required to complete a swim test. If a swimmer passes the test, they’ll be given a green wrist band to be able to swim in any pool at any time.
A swimmer with a red wrist band can swim in the Family Pool at any time. If a Red Band swimmer would like to swim in the lap pool, they must:
Wear a life jacket at all times.
Have a parent with them in the water if they are under 8.
Stay in the designated shallow area of the pool if they are over 8 and do not have a parent in the water.
Have a parent with them in the water if they are over 8 and in the deep end.
WHAT IS INCLUDED THE TEST?
Swimmers will need to be able to do the following in order, without being out of breath, and without stopping:
Swim from the diving boards to the half-way point of the pool.
Tread water for 30 seconds.
Swim to the shallow end of the pool.
Back float for 30 seconds.
NO UNDERWATER SWIMMING IS ALLOWED DURING THE TEST.
HOW DO SWIMMERS GET TESTED?
Starting January 1, please tell the front desk upon arrival if you plan to swim so that you can be tested and receive your swim band before entering the pool. Any swimmer under 16 who does not wish to be tested will be considered a Red Band swimmer.
